Historic legacy: The school was founded in 1956 as the first Catholic school in Southern Maryland that was never racially segregated. That commitment to serving a diverse community remains an important part of our identity today.
• Award-winning STEM program: St. Peter's is one of the few schools in Southern Maryland to offer the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum and has earned PLTW Distinguished School recognition for its outstanding STEM program. This national designation recognizes schools that excel in student participation, engagement, and achievement through hands-on learning in engineering, computer science, and problem-solving. Middle school programs focus on Flight and Space, Automation and Robotics, and Medical Detectives.
• Award-winning faculty and programs: St. Peter's teachers are recognized for excellence beyond the classroom. The school has produced multiple Golden Apple Award recipients, an honor presented annually by the Archdiocese of Washington to outstanding Catholic school educators. As well as having a teacher named the ‘Catholic Teacher of the Year’ from the Knights of Columbus for the state of Maryland, these awards reflect St. Peter's longstanding tradition of exceptional teaching, faith-filled leadership, and dedication to student success.
• Strong academic reputation: The school is known for setting high expectations while providing support for students. Parents and alumni frequently mention that graduates transition well into competitive high schools and feel well prepared academically.
• Community and faith: Because it's a ministry of Saint Peter's Catholic Church, students regularly participate in Mass, service projects, and faith formation. Families often describe the atmosphere as welcoming and close-knit rather than impersonal.
• Extracurricular opportunities: Beyond academics, the school offers band, athletics (basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball), middle school electives, and other enrichment activities, helping students develop interests outside the classroom.
• National recognition: St. Peter's is a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School, a distinction awarded to schools demonstrating high academic performance and significant gains in student achievement.
