ORACLE EMERGENCE

Kory Koontz

The Author’s Critique & Indie Review

“A post-apocalyptic narrative that pairs visceral tragedy with an imaginative, if occasionally uneven, exploration of supernatural healing.”

In Oracle Emergence, author Kory Koontz presents an emotionally charged, character-driven story set in a post-apocalyptic near-future. Following a cataclysmic global earthquake and a devastating pneumonic plague, former therapist Chaz Jordan finds himself the sole survivor of his family. Awakening in a ruined Denver, Chaz soon discovers he possesses an extraordinary gift: his touch can heal the fractured minds and bodies of other survivors, transforming their dark despair into vibrant light. Drawn toward a bustling central hub known as the Confluence, Chaz navigates a fractured society divided between the seemingly ordinary “Menials” and the supernaturally gifted “Exceptionals”. As Chaz assumes the mantle of “the Oracle,” guided by the mysterious leader Phineas, he must unite these factions and master an ancient seer stone called Gazelem to fend off Zane Calder, a malevolent force intent on absorbing the survivors’ powers.

Koontz weaves a high-stakes tale of grief and renewal, anchoring the speculative elements in Chaz’s profound sense of loss. The prose is straightforward and occasionally poignant, particularly in the quiet moments Chaz spends grappling with the memory of his deceased wife and children. However, the narrative’s pacing occasionally stumbles under the weight of extensive exposition and rapid shifts in character allegiances. The world-building—featuring telekinetics, animal whisperers, and underground hydroponic gardens—is inventive, yet the rapid introduction of these elements sometimes overshadows character depth. While Chaz is a sympathetic and compelling protagonist, the supporting cast, including the villainous Calder, often borders on one-dimensional archetypes. Nevertheless, the novel’s core themes of empathy and resilience offer a refreshing, hopeful twist on standard post-apocalyptic tropes.

An ambitious, heartfelt dystopian fantasy that overcomes clunky execution with a genuinely uplifting vision of human connection.

From the Reader’s Desk

Kory Koontz’s Oracle Emergence offers a fascinating sociological inquiry into post-cataclysmic human reorganization. By bifurcating the surviving population into “Exceptionals” and “Menials”, Koontz establishes a poignant commentary on class dynamics and trauma recovery. The protagonist, Chaz Jordan, serves as an intriguing psychological anchor; his transition from a grieving therapist to a messianic conduit of healing forces readers to interrogate the mechanics of empathy. While the narrative’s pacing is occasionally hindered by rapid world-building, the thematic depth surrounding resilience and the collective human spirit renders it a thought-provoking exercise in speculative fiction.

In the crowded landscape of dystopian fiction, Oracle Emergence distinguishes itself by centering radical empathy over sheer survivalist grit. Koontz redefines the apocalypse not merely as a destructive event, but as an evolutionary catalyst, gifting survivors with profound cognitive and supernatural awakenings. The concept of the “Oracle”—a leader whose primary weapon is the ability to absorb and transmute despair into hope—pushes the boundaries of traditional hero archetypes. It is a bold, thematic swing that challenges our cultural fascination with grimdark futures, proposing instead a conversational framework where connection and healing are the ultimate currencies of power.

Hold on tight, because Oracle Emergence is an absolute wild ride! One minute Chaz is surviving a world-shattering earthquake, and the next, he’s discovering his hands literally glow with the power to heal while dodging a literal murder of crows controlled by a supernatural tyrant. Koontz balances the wacky—like a telekinetic army teaming up with a zoo’s worth of rhinos and lions to storm a fortress—with genuine, heartfelt stakes. The action sequences fly by at breakneck speed, making this a wacky, adrenaline-fueled spin on the end of the world!

— Marcus Thorne

Talk about shaking things up! I went into Oracle Emergence expecting your standard doomsday survival story, but it gets all up in your feelings. Chaz losing his family wrecked me, but watching him realize his touch literally cures people’s bad vibes is wildly satisfying. The whole dynamic between the super-powered folks and the regular survivors leads to some super juicy chats. It just feels good to read a book where the main guy’s superpower is basically being the best therapist ever. Seriously, grab some snacks and get comfy, because this one’s a vibe.

Boom! My mind is blown! Oracle Emergence messes with your head in the best possible way. How do you even survive losing everyone you love, only to wake up and realize you’re the chosen one?! Chaz’s journey pokes at so many big ideas about hope and starting over. And don’t even get me started on Charlie—that poor little girl turning invisible to hide from the bad guys broke my heart! The way Chaz protects her, and then the massive showdown with the Darks and the animals?! I was screaming at the pages! It’s just so much emotion and action packed into one story!

The juxtaposition of celestial perfection and terrestrial corruption in Xiong’s narrative offers a compelling study of dualism. The text operates less as a traditional fantasy adventure and more as a sociopolitical allegory, particularly in its exploration of “greed” as a contagion that disrupts the balance of “All Things.” While the heavenly sequences provide a theological framework, the narrative truly resonates in the second half, where the protagonist attempts to construct a sustainable governance model among the Ureullenz. The transition from mythic hero to pragmatic statesman is a fascinating

evolution, grounding the folklore in tangible human struggles. Ultimately, the work serves as a profound meditation on the resilience of cultural identity against the encroaching shadow of historical trauma.

Greed Effects Part 2 is not content to simply entertain; it aims to provoke a conversation about the trajectory of human civilization. The book pushes the boundaries of the genre by blending high-fantasy tropes with a stark warning about resource depletion and the “catastrophic self-reset” of society. It challenges the reader to look beyond the immediate battle between armies and consider the metaphysical war waged within the human conscience. Xiong successfully argues that leadership is not about power, but about the containment of malice—a timely theme for contemporary readers. It is a rare sequel that manages to expand its world-building while simultaneously sharpening its focus on the ethical responsibilities of those in power.

Talk about a shift in gears! One minute we are floating through cloud tunnels in Heaven with a Prince, and the next we are dealing with hostage situations and burning villages on Earth. Touzeej’s journey is a wild ride that doesn’t shy away from the weirdness of its world—ducks that are actually servants? Check. A goddess becoming human? Double check. It’s wacky in the best way, but when the war drums start beating against the King of Strummulfizz, the stakes feel incredibly real. It’s a unique mix of dreamlike wonder and hard-hitting action.
